Artist Statement: Ever fascinated by the natural world, the landscape of the psyche, the healing process, and spiritual concepts, my pieces are inspired by the connections and tensions among these perennial interests and explorations of my inner world. Although my work can be described as ‘abstract surrealism’, the deep structures of the physical world and natural forms are often evident in the imagery. I use two different approaches to designing my pieces, but both involve a conversation, a dialogue between materials and myself. I am often inspired by found objects: manufactured, organic and/or inorganic elements from Nature. |
I begin with either a single item, a cluster, or a collection of items, designing around these elements by responding to the selected forms and shapes.Conversely, I may start with a scientific concept or psychological experience as a starting point - exploring the idea through art making and seek elements to expand the idea. The design phase often is fluid and on-going, beginning on paper but remaining open. A particular piece may change significantly as the dialogue with the materials unfolds through selecting specific pieces of glass or as inspiration emerges during the production process. Since much of my work incorporates three-dimensional elements in a nearly two-dimensional medium, experimentation is an essential aspect of the final piece and contributes to the unique quality of each one.
