Irrealis
Mixed Media, Enhanced Macro Photographs
Artist Statement: Irrealis “... The might – have – been – that never happened but isn’t unreal for not happening and might still happen, so we fear it never will and sometimes wish it won’t happen or not quite yet.“ —Andre Aciman, Homo Irrealis This current body of work is definitely a divergence from anything I’ve ever done before. Prior to beginning this series I moved through a lot of transition in my life. The idea of finding artistic expression again was a bit frightening and uncomfortable. This work represents a bridge between artistic pause and an active need to express myself, to see again. |
All of the art in this exhibit started with macro photography. In my experience, in the very close-up view of such seemingly mundane subjects like rust on guard rails, there is a very intimate beauty, an “other world“ to be seen or imagined. Perhaps a world that might have been, is yet to be, or will never be. For me, this holds the idea that there is no such thing as time. Interestingly, it was only after I completed this series that I came across the essays of Andre Aciman, which described not only the essence of these pieces, but for the first time articulated so succinctly how I’ve felt for much of my life. His words ground this collection, give it breath and possibility. This is where the title, Irrealis, is derived, all that could’ve been, might be, but maybe not, full of the mystery of being wherever the viewer is taken. In a similar way, I see and incorporate Asemic writing in my art; a place the viewer can linger, between the experience of reading and the visual, making it intimately their own.
As mentioned, each piece began with a macro photograph which I then enhanced with acrylics, ink, and cut paper.
I hope that these images inspire you to imagine and ponder the mysteries and possibilities in every moment no matter where it exists in your own life’s timeline.
