Bio / Artist Statement: meg hamilton is a self-taught artist, working quietly and fairly unknown in her 210-year-old log cabin in west virginia. she grew up on elysian avenue, a small street in a small town on the banks of the hudson river in new york. she feels the roots of her art lie in the green days of her early childhood. it was there that her heart first opened to the wonder and magic of nature. she saw design everywhere she looked: in the shadows of tree branches on her bedroom wall and in the lines and fissures of the old plaster ceilings in her home. to her they were languages. she invented secret languages and would spend hours writing page after page of her newfound words and designs. she was an asemic child. |
many years have passed since that magical childhood time, but the memories remain strong. the gift of pure imagination continues to keep giving. now that she is older, she is again set free to play and explore and imagine to her heart’s content. she can combine her love of watercolor and calligraphy with the freedom of movement and design that asemic writing allows.
asemic writing understands.
it is not dramatic, but quiet. it is patient. it has a melody, and hums happily when i paint.
a friend since childhood, it has encouraged me to see the world in motion. as i write this a wind is moving the grasses in the field near my home and blowing the newest blossoms of a weeping cherry through the air.
it is an asemic kind of day.
i hope these pieces give you pleasure and peace. i am so happy to share them with you.

Artist Statement:
for me asemic writing is the language of my most inner heart.
i cannot separate its curves and sweeps, its lilts and falls, from the world that surrounds me. it allows me to give voice to the whispers and words that dwell within the pockets of silence i have carried within me. a language for the times and events in life for which no words existed.
the asemic child rides again.
meg is currently selling her work in two galleries near her home. she is most happy making art and giving it away.
